FAME^AIS Student events

From June 11th to 13th, the FAMEais cohort gathered in Darmstadt, Germany, for the Summer Workshop that marks the culmination of their two-year journey in the master’s programme Functional Advanced Materials Engineering with Artificial Intelligence for Sustainability (FAMEais). Held at a local conference venue and hosted by the technical university, the event brought together students, academic staff, and guests to reconnect and celebrate the closing of this academic chapter.

Over the course of three days, students presented their Master’s thesis work to peers, faculty members, and consortium representatives. These sessions not only highlighted scientific progress but also reflected the programme’s growing focus on data-driven methodologies and sustainable innovation in materials science. From AI-assisted materials design to energy-efficient processing, the projects demonstrated a compelling mix of academic depth and technological relevance.

Plenary lectures added further value to the programme. The opening session explored the multiscale topography of textiles, offering a compelling example of how rational design can align functionality with sustainability. Later in the week, a team from industry led a session on advanced magnetism, underlining the potential of smart materials for future technologies.

Alumni also returned to share their journeys after FAMEais. One graduate provided insight into career pathways, professional challenges, and the importance of staying adaptable in a fast-evolving sector. Another alumna engaged in meaningful dialogue with the students, offering encouragement and advice.

Outside of the academic programme, participants enjoyed a guided tour of Darmstadt’s city center and a relaxed informal dinner—valuable moments to build connections and unwind after a busy year.

The workshop concluded with the official FAMEais certificate award ceremony. As group photos were taken and final goodbyes exchanged, it was evident that while one journey was ending, a new one—full of promise—was about to begin.
